At Chitty's Cake Shop, nestled cosily within Birmingham's most creative and exciting complex - The Custard Factory - you will find our home. It’s more than just a cake shop – you can of course treat yourself to cake and a hot or cold drink, buy a gift voucher, book a class, talk to someone about ordering a bespoke cake, perhaps take part in a short workshop and purchase specialist cake decorating equipment that can be hard to find elsewhere. Bespoke cakes need to be ordered at least 3 days in advance (and 'Simply Sweet' ones 24 hours ahead of time), but you can come along to purchase a box of cupcakes in a mix of the flavours on the menu that day plus traybakes and slices of cake, all freshly baked on the premises.
Here are just a few of the things you can do at Chitty’s Cake Shop on Gibb Street (next door to 'Clink Beer'):
- Browse, get advice on and purchase specialist cake baking and decorating equipment – we only sell products that we use and recommend ourselves and we would be happy to show you how to use them and help you decide what you might need for a specific project. See below for pictures of our stock and prices.
- Relax with a hot drink (we serve Twining’s tea, Cadbury's hot chocolate and Quarterhorse coffee – roasted right here in Birmingham!) and a cupcake or sweet treat freshly baked on the premises
- Purchase a box of cupcakes to take away – we can gift-wrap these in boxes of 4, 6 or 12 and you can choose from the selection on sale that day (see below for our current flavours, updated weekly)
- Collect pre-ordered bespoke cakes and cupcakes (we ask for three days’ notice for these, or a minimum of 24 hours for our ‘Simply Sweet’ range)
- Talk to a member of staff about a cake order – we can discuss ideas, look at pictures and provide quotes and answer any questions you may have
- Book a class – you can talk to our staff to find out which class would be best for you and get any questions answered before booking
- Arrange a wedding consultation – you can come and talk to our cake designer to share ideas, look at examples, taste some samples and get a quote for your wedding (you can find more information on our wedding service here)

Cake Decorating Equipment
The downstairs of our shop is dedicated to selling cake baking and decorating equipment. Here you can find a wide range of cake tins, food colourings, icing, piping nozzles, rolling pins and much more besides. We only sell equipment that we use ourselves and highly recommend so you know the quality is up to standard. We will also try to help with advice on your projects where possible.
Rolling Pin - 6 or 9 inch: £5.00
PME non-stick rolling pin (15cm/6 inch or 23cm/9 inch)
These PME white non-stick rolling pins are ideal for rolling gum paste to make decorations. These small sizes are great for making small decorations and rolling gumpaste out very thinly (for example to make frills) by rolling it out on a non-stick mat. They are non-stick so no cornflour or icing sugar is needed - this means the colour stays bright and your icing doesn't dry out. 6 inch is £5, 9 inch is £7.
Cake Smoother: £4.00
White plastic cake smoother
These cake smoothers are useful for so much more than just smoothing cakes! They can be used to make cubes (great for building blocks, and dice) and to roll long thin pieces of icing for use as hair, arms, legs and much more. They are, of course, intended for smoothing down the surface and sharpening the edges of cakes covered in sugarpaste - both round and square.
Tylo Powder: £5.00
Tylo Powder (50g) by Sugarcraft Essentials
Tylo powder is one of the most important ingredients in the cake decorating world. It is used to create gumpaste (by adding it to sugarpaste) and also to make edible glue (by mixing it with water). As you only use a small amount at a time, this tub will last a long time. It is suitable for vegetarians & vegans, kosher, halal and GMO & allergen free.
Drying Foam: £3.00
Sheet of shaped sponge/foam
This sheet of drying foam is essentially a big sponge that is used for drying shapes - either flat or shaped. One side is covered in bumps allowing you to leave flowers and leaves to dry 3D. The other side is flat so you can leave shapes (even very large ones) to dry flat so the air will dry it from every angle. The exact size of the foam can vary, but is usually at least 30cm x 20cm.
Non-Stick Mat: £8.00
Non-stick 'Smart' Mat by FMM (30cm x 30cm)
This non-stick mat is the ideal tool to roll out gumpaste onto when making decorations. It does exactly what it says - it will stop your gumpaste from sticking to the mat!
Quilting tool: £3.00
This tool is three in one. Use one attachment to make a stitch effect (great for creating a quilted effect), one flat wheel can be used to roll straight lines, and the third is a zig-zag which is useful for making a zip effect amongst other things.
Piping Nozzles: £3.00
Jem piping nozzles (for buttercream)
These metal piping nozzles, by Jem, are ideal for piping buttercream with disposable piping bags. A variety of shapes is available including the popular 2D and 1M plus several other oversized nozzles.

These tools are useful for all sorts of modelling, sugar flower making and cake decorating. There are 14 different tools (7 double ended).

So many uses, and they are so strong they can last a really long time. £3 each or choose any 4 for £10.
White Sugarpaste: £9.00
Renshaw sugarpaste (1kg or 2.5kg)
This Renshaw Sugarpaste is what we use to cover all our cakes - it tastes great, and is really easy to work with. We stock two different sizes - 1kg is £4, a larger 2.5kg pack is £9 or a box of two (5kg) is £16. It lasts for months if kept sealed up at room temperature.
Cutter shapes: £4.00
Set of cutters - any shape
These sets of cutters are great for making small decorations. They come in a series of different sizes (3 or 4 depending on the shape) and come in many shapes including butterfly, bird, blossom, calyx, snowflake, leaf and more.
Palette Knife : £6.00
6 inch palette knife perfect for crumb coating cakes
This PME palette knife is ideal for covering cakes with buttercream or ganache - it's a comfortable size to handle so you have lots of control and can achieve sharp edges to your icing.
Dummy Cakes: £3.00
Polystyrene dummy cakes in various sizes
Choose from a 6 (£3), 8 (£4) or 10 (£5) inch size round dummy to practice your icing techniques, create display cakes that last, or add an extra tier to a large cake without wasting lots of ingredients! They are 3 inches deep.
Celbuds : £3.50
Polystyrene buds for making sugar roses
These Celbuds can be bought in three different sizes and can be used to make sugar roses of all sizes. They are £3.50 per pack, or you can buy and 3 packs for £10.
Petal Pad: £4.00
JEM Petal Pad for thinning the edge of rose petals
These JEM petal pads are ideal when making sugar roses - use with a ball tool to thin the edges of rose petals, create frills, ruffles and more.
Silicone moulds in a variety of shapes
Choose from a variety of shapes of these silicone moulds - they are really easy to use (when you know how!) and make detailed and intricate decorations with minimal effort. Small ones are £4 and larger or multi-moulds are £6.
Turntable to spin your cake as you decorate
These turntables make decorating cakes so much easier - you can place your cake on top and spin to your heart's content! Really useful when adding a crumb coating of buttercream, making a quilted design on the side of a cake, adding decorations, piping around the base of the cake... the list goes on!
Push Cutters : £10.00
Variety of push cutters - both numbers and letters
These sets of large easy-to-use 'push cutters' from Cake Star are absolutely fantastic for writing names and ages on cakes, and can also be used as cupcake toppers. We sell three sets - capital letters & lower case letters (£14) and numbers (£10).
Disposable Piping Bags: £2.00

This pack of 12 disposable piping bags is ideal if you like to pipe buttercream using large nozzles. They are strong and sturdy, yet cheap enough to dispose of afterwards with no guilt!

The quality of these tins make a real difference to your bakes. We currently sell round tins, but will be expanding our range to square ones soon.
